SOUTH YARRA HOUSE PROGRESS REPORT BY WILL SALTER

Garden photographer Will Salter has visited South Yarra House for a progress report and provided these stunning images of the developing landscape merging with the architecture.

New buildings are typically at their best when first completed, then propped up through a maintenance regime. South Yarra House takes a long-term view, intended to improve over time with very little need for maintenance, except for maybe a window clean every now and then and a bit of prune.

Designed to stand alone without its plants, only now – years later, it is progressing into its next stage as the landscape becomes an inseparable part of the architecture.

It will continue to evolve over the next 30+ years. Tall trees will establish in the surrounding garden, and the copper will slowly transition into its final state of oxidization, becoming one with the surrounding garden and its heritage context.
